Japan is the Land of the rising sun and a place of exquisite exotic and culture. There are combined the concepts of tradition and present time. In Japan the ancient pagodas and gate of spirits adjoin to mirror skyscrapers, grandiose "five" - to comfortable rekana, spa centres - to national furo. It is a fantastic mix of heritage of the East and achievements of the West. Today the Japanese culture is very popular around the world. They are dolls, ikebana, origami, kimono and fans.
At the exhibition «Dolls of Japan, kimono and accessories» you can get acquainted with traditional Japanese dolls, national clothes kimono and haori, and also with numerous kinds of fans.
Dolls (in Japanese is “ningyo”) are the essential element of festive culture of Japan. Japanese dolls are famous for their variety and unique technique. Throughout several centuries they have an important place in traditional holidays of Japan.
The fan is an important detail of not only Japanese suit, but also Japanese life. The first folding fans were called Ogi. They were an attribute of man as a weapon. Later the samurais used fans for signals. In the 10th century a fan became an attribute of aristocrats.
In the middle ages the Japanese women of high society believed that to show a face is indecently and even it is dangerous. It was indecently to have suntanned skin. A white skin was a sign of a "real" beauty who never worked in the field. Thus, the Japanese fan had three main functions in everyday life: to protect from the sun, to induce airflow and to hide a face. Often in special cases women and monks exchanged fans. They were used as attribute of a tea ceremony, and also as a notebook.
During the ceremony there will take place the fashion show of kimono and haori – they are art of "showing of the beauty hidden from eyes".
Mrs. Kamohara, the spouse of the ambassador, will make the lessons of origami for everyone interested.
The exhibits of the exhibition «Dolls of Japan, kimono and accessories» will tell the visitors a set of strange stories, slightly open a veil to the fantastic and unique world of the Japanese festive culture.
